This week, I was extra conscientious about my use of heat and electricity since I found out that the bill ties those two together. I did not have to use any heat because the weather was warm at night. My only challenge is that I live with a roommate who is "sometimes" just a little bit difficult to live with. He forgets to turn off the light and sometimes does not pay attention to unplugging the coffeemaker or the toaster because even if you are not using an appliance it is still using energy if it is plugged in. I am doing my best and slowly, I believe I am making a difference.
I felt pretty proud of myself this week because that is when I got a bill from Minnesota Power and it was approximately $45 for the entire month of September. That was pretty good I thought; and my roommate and I
just split the bill and actually paid it this morning.
This week I learned that not everybody has the same views and values that you do. It can also take time for other people to understand where you are coming from when you are trying to explain environmental issues to them.
My plans for next week is to keep my use of heat and electricity as low as possible. My goal for my next bill in the mail is to be just the same amount if not lower.
Roommates can be tough. I live with 5 other people and one especially and surprisingly (due to his major) is not very environmentally conscience. He leaves lights on ALL the time! Everyone will agree with your beliefs but I like that you are trying to explain and educate people. Reminds me of the phrase "The answer is always no, unless you ask" kind of meaning that they will always do what they have always done until someone explains and then maybe they will realize what the consequences are and change, although not always. Does that make sense? Seems like a very long explanation
ReplyDeleteGood for you Sarra! I think that is pretty cheap for an electric bill. My roommates leave lights on all the time too!! The one light both of them always leave on is their closet lights. Whenever I get home I go into their rooms to turn them off! It's always hard for me to confront people about stuff like that so I am impressed/jealous that you can talk to your roommate about it.
ReplyDeleteRoommates are very hit and miss. I'm sure I'm just as annoying constantly turning the heat down and they constantly turn it back up so it's just kind of a back and forth battle! Sometimes people just don't think! Just keep reminding them and they'll eventually get the idea that you are serious and that it will help them save money too!
